Educational activity “Get to Know Electricity”
Target audience: pupils in grades 1 to 4.
This activity provides pupils with basic knowledge aboutelectricity generation. Schoolchildren will learn about how a hydropower plant operates and how to act in situations related to electricity.
Educational activity “Construction of the Ķegums Hydropower Plant through the Lens of Eduards Kraucs”
Target audience: pupils in grades 5 to 12, university and college students and other interested persons.
This activityprovides an extensive insight into the construction of the Ķegums Hydropower Plant – the largest industrial facility in Latvia and the Baltics in the first half of the 20th century – documented in photographs and newsreels by Eduards Kraucs. To promote awareness of photographs as witnesses of historical events and documentary heritage assets, the participants of the activitywill learn how to discern a variety of information and the photographer’s message to the future generations in an antiquated photograph.
During the activity, the participants will get to know about the development of photographic techniques across the world and in Latvia, view photo negatives and photographs, still and motion picture cameras used in various periods, and watch fragments of E. Kraucs’ sound newsreels on the construction of the Ķegums Hydropower Plant in the 1930s. The original newsreels are archived by the Latvia State Archive of Audiovisual Documents in Riga.
Educational activity “How Latvenergo Hydropower Plants were Built”
Target audience: pupils in grades 6 to 12, university and college students and other interested persons.
The educational activityprovides a general insight into the beginnings of hydropower engineering in Latvia, the hydropower plants of Latvenergo, their construction history and operational principles, emphasising the generation of environmentally friendly electricity using water.
The content of the educational activityis enriched with the video from the Latvia State Archive of Audiovisual Documents– a video presentation with newsreel fragments showing the construction of the Latvenergo hydropower plants, such as the Ķegums, Pļaviņas and Riga HPPs.
Educational activity „History of Riga Electricity Supply at the end of the 19th century – the first half of the 20th century”
Target audience: pupils in grades 6 to 12 and other interested persons.
The activity will provide information on the first steps in the electricity supply of Riga at the end of the 19th century and the rapid development of power engineering in the first half of the 20th century, putting Riga forward as a leader among the biggest cities in the Baltic States.
The activities are free of charge.
